Was reading this article on the Toronto Star about mass extinctions. I have to admit while I knew about the mass extinction that led to the dinosaurs dying, I didn’t hear about the Permian-Triassic extinction which led to 96% of the world’s animal species dying. Heck! Apparently every creature that lives on Earth now was descended from the 4% of animals that survived. Several things came to the forefront of my mind when I read this. Firstly that life is so precious. Imagine something like that happening today & the innumerable human, animal, & plant life that would be lost. Secondly, it’s amazing the amount of diversity that evolved from only 4% of the survivors to what exists on the planet today. Thirdly, it saddens me that we aren’t taking care of our planet, nor are we taking care of ourselves. Fourthly, I hope we come to our senses before we totally drink this planet dry of all that is the wonder of life. Life is precious. Not just yours & mine, but everything on our once beautiful blue & green planet. We should take care of it.
