About Eco Nuts:

Eco Nuts was founded by Mona Weiss a scientist, actress, comedian who has allergies to normal detergents and Scott Shields, a social entrepreneur, actor and ecological enthusiast. In October of 2012 they appeared on Shark Tank. Eco Nuts was also featured on ABC News with a cost comparison. Eco Nuts makes a variety of products from laundry detergent to organic cleaners. I was really happy when they contacted me to try their products. I’ve heard so much about soapberries but I’d never tried them before. So I was really eager to see what effect they would have on our clothes. For more information about Eco Nuts, take a look at their About page.

Soap Nuts

Ingredients: Wild Grown, De-Seeded Soap Nuts

Commonly called soapberries, or washnuts, Sapindus mukorossi is a berry shell that naturally contains saponin. Saponin is a natural cleaner that works as a surfactant which helps penetrate the fibres of your clothing and lift dirt away from the fabric which can then be washed away by water. I was sent the medium box of soap nuts, which is good for about 100 loads. To use, you put about 4 or 5 of the soap nuts in a small fabric sack and toss it into your washing machine. That’s it! No need for fabric softener. When we used the soap nuts for the first time we noticed that the clothes felt soft, smelled fresh and the whites seemed whiter. We’re really happy with this product and will continue to use it. I even gave some to my mother (who really loves her Tide liquid detergent and fabric softener) and she now loves it as well. What I love about the soap nuts is that it’s simple to use, time efficient, and is cost effective. Using soap nuts would make it easy to teach your kids how to do laundry and set an example for being eco-friendly. Heck if you have a college-aged kid living away from home this would be a godsend for them. No lugging huge plastic bottles of laundry detergent and fabric softener down to the laundry machines. All they would need to bring is the small fabric sack of soap nuts. We’re definitely going to continue buying this product.

Organic Liquid Laundry Soap

Ingredients: Organic Sapindus mukorossi (soapberry) extract, organic alcohol, organic glycerin, organic cyamopsis tetragonoloba (guar) gum Certified Organic By Oregon Tilth

If you have an HE machine, or prefer liquid laundry soap, this is the item you want to buy from Eco Nuts. It has the same effects as the Soap Nuts and you do not need to use fabric softener with this laundry soap either. The 18 oz bottle is good for 60 HE loads or 30 regular loads. I prefer the regular soap nuts better so I probably wouldn’t repurchase this. But the good thing to know is that you have options if you ever change your laundry machine and get an HE washer. As with the soap nuts there is no actual fragrance on the clothes once washed. They simply smell fresh and clean.

Cost: $15.99 USD, 532 ml / 18 oz

Certified Organic Glass Cleaner Spray

Ingredients: Organic Sapindus mukorossi extract, organic acetic acid, proprietary blend of organic essential oils certified organic by Oregon Tilth

This glass cleaner spray uses a basic but effective recipe. Acetic acid smells a lot like vinegar and works very well for cleaning glass. I used this to clean the mirror in our bathroom. It takes a little bit more wiping to clear away the residue and streaks. But afterwards the glass is very clean and the smell does dissipate quickly. The price is economical, but I’m not sure if I would repurchase this. I could probably do a DIY glass cleaner that is similar using some household items I already have lying around. This would however, be great for those who don’t have the time to DIY and for those who live in the USA. Since I live in Canada I would be paying extra for the conversion rate, shipping costs, and any duties that are applicable.

Cost: $6.99 USD, 354 ml / 12 oz
Available at: Eco Nuts
Brand Origin: USA
Rating: 4/5

Certified USDA Organic Surface Cleaning Spray

Ingredients: Organic Sapindus mukorossi extract, organic acetic acid, proprietary blend of organic essential oils certified organic by Oregon Tilth

This cleaning spray seems to be exactly the same recipe as the glass cleaner spray. I’m not sure what the difference is. It also works effectively, but as with the glass cleaner spray I could probably DIY this so that I wouldn’t have to pay conversion, shipping and duties. Otherwise, I would recommend this for busy households that want to switch to eco-friendly cleaners.

Cost: $6.99 USD, 354 ml / 12 oz
Available at: Eco Nuts
Brand Origin: USA
Rating: 4/5
